Having opened in 1900, the Paris metro is one of the oldest and most iconic in the world. Operating 16 lines over 245 kilometers of track densely packed into the proper it acts like a tram system would in other European cities. While in the French capital, one is never more than 500 meters away from a metro station. The Paris metro was the first to incorporate many technologies used on subways around the world. The first Rubber Tyred metro was operated here as well as one of the first fully automated metro lines. Rolling stock on the network varies from being very modern to very old with the oldest metro stock being from 1967 and the newest from 2025. The MF19s are set to replace all historic rolling stock and will operate on 8 of the system’s lines in the long term. Four new metro lines are also currently under construction which are set to double the systems size once complete. They are part of an expansion project called the Grand Paris Express and will act as circumferential services to connect the regions around the French capital. This is hands down my personal favourite metro system in the world and I truly believe it forms part of one of the greatest transit systems in the world.
